Preserving Joshua Tree National Park.
Less than two hundred miles east of Los Angeles, on some days, especially during summer, Joshua Tree National Park experiences the dirtiest air (in terms of visibility impairment and ozone concentrations) within any national park. Another threat to the park is the proposed development of 10 golf courses near Cottonwood on the southern end of Joshua Tree. Also after many years of battle in 2005 Judge Timlin ruled against Kaiser Mountain, Inc. and the BLM in a suit files by the National Park Conservation Association stopping a proposed landfill to be used for the garbage from seven nearby southern California counties. If developed, 20,000 tons of garbage a day would be brought here over the next 115 years. Seth Shteir, a senior program coordinator at the National Park Conservation Association in Joshua Tree, compared building a dump at Eagle Mountain to "putting a sewage treatment plant next to the Sistine Chapel."
